Melbourne CBD Photoshoot Guide (2026)
Melbourne's CBD offers an incredible variety of backdrops within walking distance. Historic architecture, hidden laneways, grand staircases and modern city streets can all be included in a single session—but a little planning goes a long way.
One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to fit too many locations into one shoot. In reality, allowing time to wander, chat and capture genuine moments always creates better photographs than rushing between landmarks.
How many locations should we visit?
Rather than counting locations, I like to think about areas.
Many of Melbourne's best photo spots are only a few minutes apart, so we can photograph several different backdrops without feeling like we're constantly moving.
30-minute session
1 area
- Perfect for one of the following:
- Parliament House & Treasury Gardens
- Collins Street & nearby laneways
- Flinders Lane precinct
A shorter session lets us explore one neighbourhood thoroughly while keeping everything relaxed.
60-minute session
2–3 nearby areas
This gives us enough time to experience a variety of looks without feeling rushed.

Because these locations are within easy walking distance, we spend more time creating photographs than travelling.
90-minute session
3–4 areas
A longer session allows us to combine different parts of the city.

If we're travelling a little further, an Uber or tram between locations can save time and energy.
Planning around the light
Unlike beaches or open parks, Melbourne's CBD doesn't really have a traditional golden hour.
The tall buildings create shade much earlier in the afternoon, meaning some streets lose direct sunlight well before sunset.
The good news? That's not a bad thing.
Soft reflected light between the buildings often creates beautifully even lighting that's perfect for portraits. It also allows us to photograph throughout much of the day without worrying about harsh sunlight.
When planning your session, I'll consider:
Which streets receive light at different times of day
- Which buildings create the best reflected light
- Areas that become shaded earlier
- Crowd levels throughout the week
- Seasonal sunset times
Every route is planned with the light in mind, so we simply move through the city as conditions change.
While I have favourite locations and routes, every couple is different.
Some people love Melbourne's historic architecture, while others are drawn to hidden laneways, modern buildings or riverside views. We can even include somewhere that's meaningful to you—perhaps the café where you had your first date or the street where you met.
Rather than ticking off landmarks, we'll create a route that suits your personalities, your vision and the atmosphere you'd like your photographs to have.
My Favourite Melbourne CBD Photoshoot Locations
My go-to for timeless architecture. The grand steps, columns and sandstone create an elegant backdrop that suits engagements, couples and branding sessions. It's beautiful in almost any weather.
Right next door to Parliament House, these gardens offer a peaceful contrast to the city. Tree-lined paths, open lawns and seasonal colours make it perfect for relaxed, natural moments.
Just outside the CBD, Carlton Gardens combines heritage architecture with beautiful greenery. It's a wonderful option if you want a softer look while staying close to the city.
A tiny slice of Melbourne history. This vintage black-and-white photo booth creates a fun moment during your session, and you leave with a set of real photo strips to keep alongside your gallery.
A little more refined than Royal Arcade, with intricate details and a European feel.
Maybe it's the café where you had your first date, your regular coffee shop, your favourite bookshop or the bar where you celebrated getting engaged. These often become the most meaningful photographs because they're already part of your story.
