Stay Warm, Stay Comfortable, Stay Yourself

Winter Photoshoot Outfit Ideas

Winter is one of my favourite times of year for photos. Melbourne's cooler months bring soft light, rich colours and the perfect excuse to wear cosy layers that photograph beautifully.

The key to dressing for a winter session isn't simply wearing more clothes—it's choosing outfits that keep you warm while still feeling like you.

Embrace Layers

Layers add warmth, texture and visual interest to your photographs.

Think about incorporating:

  • Long coats
  • Chunky knit jumpers
  • Scarves
  • Cardigans
  • Denim or leather jackets
  • Blazers

Not only do they keep you comfortable, but they also create more variety throughout your gallery. Taking a coat on and off or adding a scarf can subtly change the look of your photos without needing a full outfit change.

Choose Warm, Earthy Colours

Winter landscapes tend to look best with rich, muted tones rather than bright colours.

Some beautiful colour combinations include:

  • Cream, beige and camel
  • Olive and oatmeal
  • Rust and brown
  • Navy and cream
  • Forest green with neutral tones
  • Burgundy with soft greys

These colours complement Melbourne's parks, city streets and beaches throughout winter.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

Winter often means damp paths, muddy parks and cooler temperatures, so choose footwear that's both practical and suits the location.

Boots, loafers, clean sneakers or dress shoes are all great options depending on the style of your session. If we're heading to the beach, comfortable shoes that are easy to slip off are often a better choice than heavy boots or heels.

Dress for the Weather

Melbourne weather can change quickly, especially in winter.

Bring an extra jacket between locations, wear enough layers to stay warm and don't be afraid to rug up before and after we're shooting. If you're comfortable, you'll naturally look more relaxed in your photographs.

Coordinate, Don't Match

Rather than everyone wearing the same outfit, choose colours that complement each other.

Mix different textures and shades within the same colour palette to create a cohesive look that still feels natural and reflects each person's style.

Winter Is Beautiful

Don't let the cooler weather put you off.

Winter sessions often have beautiful soft light, fewer crowds and a cosy atmosphere that's difficult to recreate at any other time of year. With the right outfits, you'll stay comfortable while creating photographs that feel warm, natural and timeless.
